Overview: Coyote Gulch is a beautiful canyon with lovely high walls and a flowing stream emptying into the Escalante River. Biting deer flies annoy anyone in the canyon during the warmer season, so long pants and sleeves may be preferred.
Approach: From Hwy 12, leaving Escalante, turn right onto Hole in the Rock Road. From the turn-off, drive down Hole-In-The-Rock Road for about 36 miles. A well-traveled road comes in on the left, Forty Mile Ridge road. Turn left and travel 4.5 miles to the top of the hill with a large water tank. Park here.
Completing the Canyon: Hike north following a cairned trail across slick rock about 2 miles to a dramatic overlook of the lower Coyote Gulch. As you approach the cliffs overlooking Coyote Gulch, it looks as though you’ll need ropes. However, there is a steep down scramble to the floor, and the need for ropes is not necessary. As soon as you drop, you will be greeted by an arch to the West. Explore the canyon and have fun! When you are finished, head back the way you came.
