Overview: The Cliff Canyon / Rainbow Bridge route is a remote backcountry trail system located on Navajo Nation lands near Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Unlike traditional canyoneering routes, this journey involves wilderness hiking through sandstone canyon country, washes, slickrock, and desert terrain surrounding Navajo Mountain.
The only maintained trail within Rainbow Bridge National Monument itself is the short walkway from the boat dock to the fenced viewing area near Rainbow Bridge. Extended hiking routes beyond this area continue onto Navajo Nation lands and require permits.
This route is best suited for experienced backcountry hikers comfortable with remote navigation, desert travel, and limited water availability.
Permits and Regulations: Backcountry permits are required for hiking and camping on Navajo Nation lands surrounding Rainbow Bridge and Navajo Mountain. Visitors should remain on established routes and respect all Navajo Nation regulations and culturally sensitive areas.
Approach: From Tuba City, take Hwy 160 northeast to Hwy 98 and continue east approximately 12.3 miles. Turn north onto Navajo Mountain Road (Road 16). The road begins paved before transitioning to sandy dirt conditions.
Follow Road 16 approximately 32 miles to a major three way junction and take the middle fork toward Rainbow Bridge.Continue approximately 5.5 miles and turn right just past a large sandstone dome. Continue a short distance to a parking area near a stone wall.
High clearance vehicles may continue farther toward the historic Rainbow Lodge area and trailhead. Road conditions vary significantly and may require high clearance or four wheel drive.
Route Description: From the Rainbow Lodge area, travel through open desert terrain, washes, slickrock benches, and sandstone canyon country toward the Rainbow Bridge region.
Unlike traditional canyoneering routes, this journey does not follow a single confined canyon for its entire length. Instead, the route weaves through a mixture of canyon drainages, open slickrock, and scenic overlooks.
