Overview: Chevelon Canyon offers a scenic canyon hike through forested terrain, open canyon walls, and a flowing creek system. This route is best considered a non-technical canyon hike with canyoneering characteristics rather than a technical canyon.

The canyon is commonly used by hikers, backpackers, and anglers. Expect a remote and less maintained environment with intermittent social trails.

Water is typically present year round. Expect frequent creek crossings and wading, and possibly short swims depending on conditions. Staying completely dry may not be possible.

Route finding can be challenging due to vegetation, boulder fields, and sections where trails disappear. Progress can be slower than expected.

Approach: From I-40 in Winslow, head south on Hwy 87 to Hwy 99. Continue south on Hwy 99 approximately 25 miles to Forest Road 504. Follow FR 504 approximately 7 miles to Chevelon Campground and park.

For a shuttle:

  • Leave a vehicle at Chevelon Campground
  • Return to FR 169
  • Drive approximately 9 miles south on FR 169 and follow signs to Chevelon Lake Campground

Access to Chevelon Lake requires a short but steep hike from the campground down into the canyon.

Route Description: Follow the creek either upstream or downstream depending on your starting point. There is no defined single trail throughout the canyon, though social paths often develop along the route.

Expect:

  • Light hiking and occasional scrambling
  • Creek crossings and possible wet sections
  • Open canyon travel with minimal technical obstacles

This canyon is best viewed as a scenic backcountry hike through a canyon environment rather than a technical canyoneering route.

Important Notes

  • Water is typically present, but full immersion is usually avoidable
  • No rappelling is required
  • Route finding is minimal compared to more technical canyons
  • This is a shared use area with hikers, campers, and anglers
  • Cell service is limited
