Overview: Ghost Rider Canyon is a scenic and technical slot canyon located near the Cedar Pocket region along the Arizona Utah border. The canyon features sculpted sandstone narrows, multiple rappels, polished corridor sections, and classic desert slot canyon scenery within the greater Virgin River Gorge region.

Though less known than many Zion canyons, Ghost Rider offers a rewarding technical descent with relatively short access and impressive slot sections.

Approach: From I-17 between Spring Valley and Black Canyon City, take Exit 256 (Badger Spring). Drive east on Badger Spring Road approximately 0.7 to 0.8 miles to a parking area near the trailhead.

From the parking area, follow the Badger Spring Trail south as it descends toward the Agua Fria River. The trail is well established and leads directly into the canyon.

Route Description: The canyon narrows quickly into sculpted sandstone corridors featuring multiple rappels and technical downclimbs.

Expect:

  • Narrow slot sections
  • Polished sandstone walls
  • Multiple rappels
  • Boulder obstacles and downclimbs
  • Dry or mildly wet conditions depending on season
  • Anchor conditions should always be evaluated carefully as flash floods and seasonal conditions may alter the canyon.

Water Conditions: Typically dry or minimally wet, though conditions can vary after storms.

Exit: After completing the final technical section, continue downstream through the drainage and washes toward Cedar Pocket Wash. The lower canyon gradually opens into broader desert terrain where non technical hiking leads back toward the access roads and trailhead area.

Most parties complete Ghost Rider as a loop or semi loop route without requiring a formal shuttle, though route variations and vehicle placement may alter total mileage.

Important Notes:

  • Flash flooding is a serious hazard
  • Technical rope skills required
  • Route finding recommended
  • Remote desert environment
  • Cell service limited or unavailable
  • Seasonal heat can be extreme
