*Private Property Alert! Munds Canyon transitions onto private property as it approaches Indian Gardens. Respect all posted signs and do not continue beyond permitted access areas.
Overview: Munds Canyon offers a scenic canyon hike featuring seasonal water, small waterfalls, pools, and short constricted sections. This route is best considered a non-technical canyon hike with canyoneering characteristics rather than a technical descent.
The canyon runs from the Munds Park area west toward Oak Creek and includes sections of scrambling, wading, and light route finding. While generally accessible, portions of the canyon narrow slightly and include small falls and obstacles that require careful navigation.
Water is seasonal but commonly present in pools and along portions of the canyon. Expect wading and possibly short swims depending on conditions.
Most users explore a short section of the canyon and return due to private property restrictions further downstream.
Approach: From Flagstaff, head south on I-17 for approximately 17 miles to the Munds Park area. Parking options include:
Use caution when parking near the highway and avoid blocking access or trespassing.
Entry points may vary and require minor route finding from the highway or Munds Park area.
Route Description: From the access point, enter Munds Canyon and travel downstream (west) from the I 17 crossing. The most scenic features, including waterfalls and tighter sections, are typically found before reaching private property boundaries.
Navigation is generally straightforward, though movement through the canyon may require choosing routes around obstacles.
Return the same way once you reach the primary waterfall and constricted sections, or any posted private property boundary. Do not continue into restricted areas.
