Overview: Fry Canyon offers a quiet and accessible forested canyon experience just south of Flagstaff. This route is best considered a non technical canyon hike with canyoneering characteristics rather than a defined canyon objective.
The canyon is wide and open with minimal obstacles, making it suitable for beginners or those looking for a low commitment outing. While not technical, it provides an opportunity to explore canyon terrain in a relaxed setting.
Water flow is seasonal and may be minimal or completely dry for much of the year. Expect uneven terrain, loose rock, and occasional vegetation along the canyon floor.
This route is best suited for casual exploration rather than a destination canyon.
Approach: From Flagstaff, head south on Hwy 89A for approximately 9 to 10 miles. Fry Canyon passes directly under the highway near mile marker 393.
Parking is available on the southwest side of the highway near the canyon crossing. Use extreme caution when parking and accessing the area, as traffic along Hwy 89A can be fast and visibility may be limited.
Completing the Canyon: From the highway crossing, enter Fry Canyon and explore either upstream or downstream depending on your preference.
Expect:
There is no defined trail throughout the canyon, but navigation is straightforward due to the open terrain. You may explore as far as desired before returning the same way. Further downstream and to the East of 89A is Pumphouse Wash, Kelly Wash, and James Canyon.
