Overview: Christopher Creek in Arizona is a lovely short canyon with many pools, some narrows, swimming, wadding, and some short rappels. The water is typically very cold, so wet suits may be preferred. The rappels can be avoided by skirting the canyon's outside rim. The creek is popular, so you may see crowds at the entrance of the creek. Jumping down and into pools can be fun but also dangerous. Be cautious if attempting to jump several feet into these pools. It's always best if the water is clear and you are positive that it's deep enough.
Approach: Payson is south of Flagstaff along Hwy260. From Payson, head east on Hwy260 and turn right toward Christopher Creek Campground. Christopher Creek Campground is one option to access Christopher Creek. Another option is to park along the Highway at the mouth of Box Canyon Trail, see map below. A shuttle may be the preferred option than hiking back along the highway.
Completing the Canyon: From the campground, drop into Christopher Creek and head west along the creek bed. Optionally, follow the Box Canyon Trail to Christopher Creek. Once you enter the Creek you will head West. The end of the Christopher Creek Narrows marks your exit at Spring Creek. However, Spring Creek access has been closed to the public, although many seem to ignore the signs and still park off the exit. This may be an exit route option. The 2nd exit rout options is further down the creek Follow spring creek to Box Canyon and following social trials on out.
