Overview: Willis Creek Slot Canyon is one of the most accessible and beginner friendly slot canyon hikes in southern Utah. Located near Bryce Canyon and the Grand Staircase Escalante region, the canyon combines shallow creek walking with scenic narrow sandstone walls, making it an excellent introduction to slot canyon hiking for families and casual hikers.
Unlike many slot canyons that begin narrow immediately, Willis Creek alternates between open wash sections and beautifully sculpted narrows, creating a relaxed and approachable canyon experience.
The canyon is especially popular for photography, summer hiking, and visitors seeking a non technical slot canyon without difficult scrambling or exposure.
Approach: From Cannonville, head south on Kodachrome Road approximately 9 miles and turn onto Skutumpah Road. Continue along Skutumpah Road approximately 6 miles to the signed Willis Creek Trailhead.
The road is generally passable in dry conditions but may become muddy or difficult after storms. Passenger vehicles are often suitable in good weather, though conditions can change quickly.
From the trailhead, descend directly into the wash and begin hiking downstream through Willis Creek.
Route Description: The route follows Willis Creek downstream through alternating open desert wash and narrow slot canyon sections. The narrows gradually become deeper and more scenic as the route progresses, though the canyon repeatedly opens into wider wash sections before tightening again.
Most hikers simply explore until turning around at a comfortable point before returning upstream to the trailhead.
Water is typically present throughout much of Willis Creek, though it is usually shallow and easy to navigate. Expect wet feet and muddy sections depending on recent rainfall and seasonal flow. Flash flooding remains a serious hazard despite the canyon’s beginner friendly reputation.
Exit: Return the same way upstream to the Willis Creek Trailhead.
Important Notes:
Willis Creek is widely considered one of the best introductory slot canyon hikes in Utah due to its easy access, minimal technical difficulty, and beautiful sandstone narrows.
